CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Science Forum will conduct a district-wise survey in the State to identify government schools with poor enrolment and dwindling admissions, besides finding out the reason for the same, said its president R Mani.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he rued that hundreds of government elementary and middle schools were in a bad state in terms of infrastructure and teaching standards, that very few people prefer to send their children to those schools. “Soon, many government schools may be shut due to poor admissions. We need to take steps to prevent that from happening,” he cautioned.

According to him, the mushrooming of private schools which lure parents by advertising their facilities such as smart classrooms, has led many to enrol their wards in private institutions. Vasanthi Devi, former vice-chancellor, Manonmaniyam University, said most private schools were not up to the mark. “The norms and standards section of the Right to Education Act has a set of rules that should have been adopted in schools by April 2014,” she said, adding that parents should be made aware of these norms. Even in government schools, facilities are not up to the mark. “Despite six per cent of the GDP having been allotted for education, the funds are not used to improve the standards of government schools,” she said.
